Electrical wiring and safety: choosing the right wire, switch and MCB
By Pappu, Pappu Electric Stores · Published · Updated
Thin wires and cheap switches are a fire risk. Here is how to match wire size to load and why good MCBs matter.
Use the right wire for the load. As a rough guide, 1.5 sq mm copper wire is used for lights and fans, 2.5 sq mm for sockets and appliances, and 4 sq mm or more for ACs, geysers and heavy loads. Ask your electrician to confirm for your home.
Always buy wires and switches from known brands with a proper bill. ISI-marked, fire-retardant wires and good-quality switches and MCBs cost a little more but protect your home from overheating and short circuits.
Fit an MCB or RCCB in your distribution box, and get the earthing checked. If you are a contractor or an electrician buying in quantity, ask us for bulk rates.
